Here's something that I borrowed from the TrulyDigidestined RPG forum. And I believe that it should be posted here.
Also, I was not the one who posted it on TDD.

First up, a quick run through on how to post: www.linuxbench.org/Posting.html . It's a joking movie, but I have vague memories of it being useful.
Now, onto some more serious stuff. Go here, and read all of it (except the part about RP types, we're operating along one series, you can ignore that):

In particular, I'll quote what I felt was the most important part:
Players
I cannot stress just how important the players are to the roleplay. They ARE the roleplay. The DMs set up the base, and they take it from there. If they don't take it anywhere, then it stays with nothing. Nothing is boring. Trust me.
A few quick pointers for good roleplaying:
-Be believable.*
A good roleplayer doesn't have a character who pulls weapons out of his ass, can block and punch, can punch through any block, can outspell, outrun.. etc..
-Be literate
Write as much as you can, using proper scentences, descriptive words, colorful words, and/or elegant words. Your writing reflects your character. If I'm to be a rich empress, my writing will be amazingly elegant, and uptight. If I'm to be a little girl, it will probably loosen up a bit and be a bit more jovial. Either way, though, you are taken with much more respect if you write clear, pleasant-to-read posts. Your character will be "in demand" and you will be happy. Happy happy happy.
Besides.. its just a lot easier to read and communicate.
-Veer clear of OOC
There IS a thread for it.. But I understand how that can get annoying, that is why the great internet Lord created aim, msn, yahoo, ICQ, and PRIVATE MESSAGES. Use them. Don't make the great internet lord weep, or he will curse you with slow connections and low bandwidth. It is annoying, and *gasp* cardable.
-Be creative
Make a new character, go with the flow, have a menal breakdown, have split personalities, kill a baby. ITS A ROLEPLAY, YOU CAN FLY!*
-Don't get emotionally attatched.
Through years of roleplaying (its sadley true.. it's been off and on for me, but I think I started when I was 13..) I've learnt that a character is a character. S/he is not you. Just because character A hates character B, doesn't mean their roleplayers have to hate each other as well. Also, if character C and D are in love, and character D decides to cheat on character C.. Don't get your panties in a twist. It really, really doesn't matter.
-Respect your fellow roleplayers
Have an amazing idea which, though it might warp the rp, is just unbelievably awesome? Well, stuff it. I don't care.
It's good to bring new things to the roleplay, and while it is great you have an idea of what they can do, or new things that can happen, you can't directly contradict something that's been said. It's just not done. If Scio posts that blue martians HATE humans, I can't have my human character go up and hug them, and rp that the blue martians give him some chocolate. (Unless they know he's highly alergic!)
-Don't Godmode
This is much like the one above. You have no right to seize control of another person's character. I can't say "And then Mya's character said "hi, I love you" and looked really, really happy." UNLESS Mya has given me permission.
(Qesun's addition: Also, don't have super-duper weapons and/or spells of mass destruction, un evadable attacks, or a character that can't be hit. If I am DM, you will be sorry.)
And there. Listen to those wise words, for they are the words of GOD. The end.
Also, I was not the one who posted it on TDD.
